Optical Data Quality

The scientific goals of the WINGS-OPT survey require:
- spatial resolution better that FWHM ~1.5Kpc;
- photometric depth such that MV(lim)~-14mag.

This table reports, for each cluster, the most interesting quantities involved in the achievement of the previous requirements.

OPT resolution

The FWHM in arcseconds is plotted against the actual physical resolution expressed in kpc, for all our WINGS-OPT observations. Apart from a few very bad cases, the bulk of our cluster sample, in both arcseconds and kiloparsecs, is located around FWHM~1.1" (see histograms in the figure).

OPT depth

This figure shows the apparent versus absolute V-band magnitudes at the detection limit, for all our WINGS-OPT observations. The requested minimal absolute depth has been achieved for practically all clusters in the survey. The only case where MV(lim) exceeds the requested limit (by just a few hundredths of a magnitude) is Abell 2149.

In order to provide the WINGS-OPT survey with accurate astrometric solutions for both WFC@INT and WFI@MPG cameras, we have also imaged the astrometric regions ACR-D/E/M/N from Stone et al.(1999). The astrometric accuracy of the WINGS-OPT survey is of the order of 0.2 arcseconds, in the worst centering situation (big galaxies). The figure below shows the comparison between WINGS and USNO coordinates (in pixels) for galaxies.
